Core Knowledge

Core Knowlege, Global Lessons.  Whether they are studying ancient Greece, world religions, or the route of the Pony Express, FHPS students are constantly exposed to the great lessons of mankind. By clearly specifying important knowledge across global history, geography, and beyond, the Core Knowledge Sequence presents a practical answer to the question, “What do our children need to know to succeed in today’s global society?”

US Constitution - We The People“Our first-grader is learning about advanced subjects such as Mesopotamia that I did not study until my second year of college! Having a solid understanding of history inside and outside our borders is a powerful tool in a world that increasingly requires an appreciation and understanding of other cultures.”

Quote by E. D. Hirsch, Jr.

“Our society cannot afford a two-tiered system in which the affluent have access to a superior education, while everyone else is subjected to a dull and incoherent classroom experience. Academic excellence, educational equity and fairness demands a strong foundation of knowledge for all learners.”

The Core Knowledge curriculum is based on the idea that even though the world is changing around us, there is a body of knowledge that forms a solid core foundation in which we can call upon to help us to measure and understand the events of today and tomorrow.Core Knowledge provides an outline of how content should be learned grade by grade in order for the learning to be cumulative, from year to year. This also allows for a scaffolding of depth of knowledge to occur. The content does not focus on just one area of the world, but is global in scope and content. This allows for the students to develop an understanding of how different events in different parts of the world are coinciding and/or connected.  The areas of focus we use are history, geography, science, and the fine arts. Federal Hill Preparatory School has the honor of being an official Core Knowledge School.
